Collecting the Data

Rhys and sometimes Stu or Ann, installs the instrumentation in the field. Depending on the size of the block to be analysed this will involve at least one 15.0m mast that will record temperature at the top and bottom, as well as wind speed and direction.

A number of data loggers are carefully deployed around the block to asses the spatial variability of  nocturnal temperatures.  Each data logger must be installed at the same height as during strong radiative cooling conditions (frost events) the air can become intensely stratified closer to the ground. Temperatures can vary 0.5  °C over 30cm on a clear, still night.

Instrumentation will be left in the field for up to 4 weeks to ensure we get a quality set of data. We require a number of nights where weather conditions mimic a frost event and we call these nights 'special observations periods' or SOP's. Data from these nights are closely analysed for a common theme or signature. We are then able to provide recommendations on how to proceed with frost mitigation.
