Who We Are

Microclimate New Zealand Ltd was established in June 2002 by Stu Powell as he has always had a passion for weather and climate, in particular FROST. Stu is based in both Wellington and Marlborough.

Stu and his truckStu Powell graduated from Victoria University with MSc (hons) in 2000. His area of expertise includes evolution of the nocturnal boundary layer in complex terrain. He spent a further 6 months in the U.S during 2001 under a science fellowship from Battelle, who manage the Pacific Northwest Government Laboratory. At Battelle he studied the development of the nocturnal boundary layer over a Washington State vineyard. 

As Manager and Climatologist Stu heads the investigative work and oversees the maps and reports as part of the finished product. Stu takes great delight in building on a lifetime passion for weather and climate.

In March 2009 Stu commenced study towards his phD through Canterbury University. The thesis topic is "Application of a Mesoscale Forecasting model to Frost Prediction, Marlborough, New Zealand". The research is expected to further improve the service that Microclimate can offer.

Rhys Mill is new to Microclimate and we are delighted to have him on board.  He was born and bred in Dunedin but moved to Blenheim in 2001. He has spent the last 7 years as a communications and telecommunications technician. This job was varied and involved designing and installing structured caballing networks,  sales, installation, programming and training phone systems, two way radio installation,  repairs of communication and telecommunication equipment., installation and servicing of Harvest weather stations.

Rhys will be carrying out all field work as well as selling and servicing any Harvest product you desire.

ann baker

Ann Baker analyses the data and in consultation with Stu, creates the reports. She also carries out all number of administration tasks including answering the phone and sending out contracts and invoices.

Ann graduated many years ago with a M Hort Sci (hons) from Lincoln University but for 15 years she taught computing papers to diploma and degree students at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT). She  is now based in Blenheim and enjoys being able to work from home, use her computer skills and finally get back to her horticultural roots.
